Certified Organic Olive Oil: What the Organic Certificate Really Verifies

Certified Organic Olive Oil: What the Organic Certificate Really Verifies
Contents

The word “organic” on a label costs nothing. The certificate behind it costs time, inspections and money. The difference between the two is what you pay for when you buy certified organic olive oil.

What the certification body checks

Organic certification does not only check the final product. It checks the whole chain:

  • The soil: no synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers, with a conversion period before full certification
  • Cultivation: protecting the trees with permitted methods, no herbicides
  • Harvest and transport: keeping organic produce separate from conventional
  • Processing: a cleaned line, no chemical solvents, no blending
  • Traceability: documentation from the plot to the bottle

Inspections take place in the field, both scheduled and unannounced, with samples taken for laboratory analysis.

Where to find the certification

On the label you should find the organic logo, the code of the control body and the operator code. If the code is missing, so is the ability to verify it. A certified producer can email you the certificate without hesitation, and that is the simplest test you can put to anyone.

Shkrela oil is certified to international organic farming standards, which opens the way for exports to the European Union and the USA.

Organic does not automatically mean good taste

This detail often gets lost. The certificate proves how the product was grown and processed. It does not measure the aroma, it does not measure the acidity and it does not guarantee high polyphenols. An organic oil that was harvested late and stored badly is still organic, but it has lost its value.

So combine two criteria: organic certification and quality indicators. Read what acidity tells you and compare it with what the label says.

How much more does it cost?

Organic production gives a lower yield per hectare and requires more manual work. Add the costs of the annual inspection and the analyses. The price difference is not marketing – it is arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check that an olive oil is really organic?

Look for the certification body’s code on the label and ask the producer for a copy of the certificate.

Does “natural” mean the same as “organic”?

No. “Natural” is not a legally regulated term and requires no inspection at all.

Is organic olive oil healthier?

It carries a lower load of chemical residues. Its nutritional value depends on the quality of processing, not only on the certificate.
