In Tirana, olive oil is sold through three channels: supermarket shelves, farmers’ markets and direct sales from the producer. All three have different prices and risks, and only one gives you documentation.
The problem with informal markets
An unlabelled demijohn on a market stall may contain very good oil. Or it may contain a blend with sunflower oil. There is no way to know, because there is no analysis, no harvest date and nobody to ask tomorrow.
This is not an accusation against farmers. It is simply a lack of information – and you pay for that risk at full price.
