Olive Oil for Sale in 5 Litres: What a Year's Family Supply Costs

Contents
Albanian families don’t buy olive oil by the bottle. They buy it by the demijohn and the canister, in quantities that last for months. Traditionally that meant a trip to the village and trusting the farmer’s word. Today you can buy the same quantity with a laboratory analysis in hand.
How much oil does a family use in a year?
The maths is simple. A family of four that cooks at home uses 15–25 litres a year. If you also use it raw, on salads and bread, you get closer to 30 litres.
- 2 people: 8–12 litres a year
- 4 people: 15–25 litres
- 6 or more: 30 litres and up
These figures make buying in quantity more economical than twelve small bottles from the supermarket shelf.
Why the cost per litre falls
Packaging, labelling and transport are fixed costs spread over the volume. A 0.5 L bottle carries almost the same packaging cost as a 1 L bottle but holds half the product. When you move to 5 L and more, you pay for the oil, not for the glass.

Does oil go off when you buy in bulk?
That is the real concern, and there are practical solutions. Olive oil keeps for about 18 months from the harvest if stored away from light, heat and air. When you buy 10 or 20 litres:
- Keep the bulk in stainless-steel containers or tins, in a cool room below 20°C
- Fill a 0.5 L dark glass bottle for weekly use and keep it in the kitchen
- Don’t open the large container more often than necessary – air is the main problem
We explain the details in our guide to storing olive oil.
What we offer in larger quantities
The Shkrela range goes from the 0.5 L bottle up to 1,000 L containers for industry. For families, the most common needs are covered by the 3 L size and 5–20 litre quantities by arrangement. Every batch comes with a laboratory analysis, and you can ask for the acidity of the batch before you order.
When to buy
The best time for your annual supply is November and December, when the new season’s oil has just been pressed. Read more in our article on the harvest season. Out of season, we supply from stock kept in controlled conditions.
